Seminar Tutor Evaluation

Having preformed my presentation, I was given feedback to progress in future Seminar Presentations. My Tutor stated I had a good amount of practice with good images and information. I had clearly undertaken appropriate and in-depth research for the presentation, giving a good account of the motivation for the work. It was good I indicated that a lot of the images are stills from performances and videos. Although reading from the script could be further developed, as it was little too fast.

I agree as I feel as though, with further experience and development with presentations, I will have more confidence to preform my presentation and further develop from reading a script, as I talk faster through reading.

Seminar Evaluation

Within my Seminar presentation, I feel I have benefited from this experience as I am developing my communicational skills. When presenting my presentation I read from a script, in which I am going to try in future, talk from points allowing me to engage with the audience more. I feel as I read from a script I talk fast, therefore my audience doesn't understand me.

I have found researching into my Artists interesting as I have developed a better understanding of her work, allowing me to explore her conceptual interest which has inspired my practice. I have portrayed Shiotas personal view relating it to my own practice. I explored Shiotas influence of Ana Mendieta and Eva Hesse, which inspire my practice as well, therefore I found this interesting to explore further. This gave me an opportunity to research into dated work.

Drawing Project- Artist Statement

My work aims to depict a spiritual presence of the unborn fetus. I am intrigued by the amniotic fluid surrounding an unborn baby in the womb, and the protection this fluid offers. I tend to incorporate fluidity within my work symbolizing movement highlighting growth and natural movement within the womb. I have layered my materials to create a depth of perspective and space between the viewer which highlighting its personal space protecting the subject.  The materials aim to create a subtle presence moving gently amongst the surroundings, experiencing suggestive to growth highlighting essences of nostalgia.

I was inspired by a personal result of my brother’s girlfriend becoming pregnant, as I often deal with the subject of death in my earlier work; I now wished to explore a contrasting topic.

My installation has been inspired by the work of artist Chihura Shiota and The Hunterian Museum in particular “Earth and Blood” as she incorporates blood and fluids as a response to her own miscarriage.  The Hunterian Museum preserves human body within jars, which I found overwhelming as they almost protect delicate subjects within a liquid form reflecting the amniotic fluid.

Self Directed Project - Artist Statement

My work aims to depict a spiritual presence of the unborn fetus. I am intrigued by the amniotic fluid surrounding an unborn baby in the womb, and the protection this fluid offers. I tend to incorporate fluidity and this idea of protection within my work, looking at different Medias, to provide the fluid elements and linking my own comfort blanket in to the work in terms of protections. I find it challenging capturing revolting Medias which in the process are symbolic of protection.

My installation has been inspired by the work of artist Chihura Shiota in particular “Earth and Blood” as she incorporates blood and fluids as a response to her own miscarriage.  Shiota has also experimented with knitting herself which intertwines with the human body, highlighting the blood circulation within the body dominating a strong element of life.

Drawing Presentation Experimentation

Projection on Silk (Drypoint)

I have layered my dry point amongst surrounding suspended silk, which is protecting the delicate subject, almost reacting like a cocoon. I have projected a video to the subject to capture a sense of movement and energy highlighting the amniotic fluid.

These photographs are video stills, which I have experimented with different angles to capture a surreal atmosphere, I have almost hidden the camera amongst the materials, creating a subtle and secretive sense.

Projection on Silk
I find this photograph successful as it captures a circular element suggestive to the inner womb, it creates a sense of nostalgia reflecting upon growth. The elements of white light creates a spiritual presence, highlighting the presence of the unborn fetus.

This captures elements of movements, emphasizing the movement of the fetus reflecting growth and development.

Self-Direction Installation Experiment

I have been experimented with different compositions, layering and lighting within my installation, I feel I have emphasized a cocoon element more intensively in this experiment, as I suspended my material surrounding the center almost protecting the inner, almost presented like a tent.

Projection on Mixed Media (Yarn, Latex, Thread, Resin, Silk)

I have projected  a video onto my installation, depicting the center of the piece, highlighting a sense of energy reflecting movement in this dominant area. I wanted to incorporate a centered focused areas of illuminated light, to highlight the the space around the dominating area as a sense of protection almost like a wall. I am almost projecting the inside of the body.

This is colour pallet is simplistic creating a calm atmosphere reflecting emotions of awe and beauty, I feel it captures a spiritual atmosphere, as it creates a sense of life amongst the darkness.

I have projected from behind the piece, depict an illuminated area, I feel this piece captures fleshy substances reflecting the inner body suggestive to the amniotic fluid highlighting a sense of protection.

Projection on Mixed Media (Yarn, Latex, Thread, Resin, Silk)

This piece is subtle, almost like a whisper amongst the darkness highlighting the presence of the unborn fetus. It almost representative of a nightlight, creating a sense of calmness and innocence suggestive to childhood. I feel the light highlights a sense of guidance thereby protection, reflecting my conceptual interest of capturing the functions of the amniotic fluid.

I feel the combination of materials creating a sense of innocence, as they are pure and delicate, holding together protection the inside. They inhabit in the surroundings moving amongst the energy, suggestive to growth and experience.

Installation with projection

Projection 2014

I feel projecting onto this subject has emphasized a sense of gestural movement, as the video captures notions, almost creating an organic atmosphere. The projection has manipulated  the surface of  the installation unexpectedly creating a unbalanced atmosphere, intimidating the audience making them feel uncomfortable. The colour within the video have depicted a natural habitat capturing elements of flesh and blood like substances, reflecting almost circulations highlighting life reflecting the developing fetus.

Projection 2014

The subtle colour pallet has intensified a spiritual atmosphere, which doesn't capture a peace sense of nostalgia therefore I don't think this subject is successful. Although I find it interesting how the project has picked up the layers of materials highlighting a sense of depth reflecting the dominance of protection within the subject.

This piece highlights the strong barrier of protection, shielding the delicate subjects.

Projection 2014

I find this photograph successful as it portrays a positive atmosphere, capturing a clinical element highlighting purity and a blood like substance creating the persona of the inside body. It creates an almost surreal atmosphere, reflecting the fluidity of the amniotic fluid, as the suspended piece evolve and adjust to the environment moving gestural, the shadows follow intensifying the security of the piece as it completely surrounds the atmosphere.

Projection 2014

This piece creates a strong element of purity reflecting almost a cradle, and comfort blanket, but it captures a element of uncertainty which could reflect emotions within my complex concept. I feel the simplistic colour pallet is cold which creates a sense of negativity therefore I don't think this is successful.

Projection 2014

I feel this projection amongst the darkness takes the depth of my practice further, emphasizing a surreal atmosphere,  it is almost like a night light or projecting the insides of the human body, illuminating the sensitive subject, and capturing the natural elements of protection of the amniotic fluid bag. The notion of materials creating a sense of fluidity creating a calm atmosphere highlighting a presence of the unborn fetus.
