Annette Fernando

Fernando is a drawing artist which I find inspiration, as she uses a depth of detail to create her figurative drawings. Fernando is currently studying BA Fine Art course at Central Saint Martins.

University of the Art London since 2012.Fernando at a young age has already presented her work in Jerwood Drawing prize Competition earlier this year, she has already created a piece and curated for a show in Tate Britain with other Artists and Students.

October 2013

I first seen Fernandos work presented in the Jerwood Drawing Prize Gallery, where I was amazed by the quality and quantity of artists work in such a small building, I found myself inspired by the use layered simplistic marks which created intensity of detail.

“I catalogue my life through a series of film stills, utilising the movies’ protagonists to interpret autobiographical stories.  In the context of pre-existing female stereotypes as portrayed by a number of male directors, I question my own experiences. While my choice of films are often set in different time and different places, the similarities between these movies highlight that I am not the only woman to have experienced these emotions, nor will I be the last.”

I believe Fernando wanted to portray how movies in different times and places can relate to the audience impacting upon their emotions, which she felt almost comforting.
She uses this and captures elements of extracts from movies and places them together in series of drawing which piece together to portray her personal biography.

Scenes from a marriage, Biro
 2013

The mark making  is used in a sensitive way, as its delicate and intricate to highlight sensitive emotions within the piece. The marks have been layered in different areas creating tonal areas which highlights a perspective within the piece. Fernando has used a simplistic and dominant composition which highlights the audiences focus onto the character.
Fernando has used traditional media which has a personal essence, using simplistically a biro pen which is an every day value suggestive that Fernando wanted to capture her thoughts quickly to express herself.

"I don't know who I am"
This could be suggestive to portray the characters feeling within this extract or reflecting Fernandos impacted emotions.

Scenes from a Marriage, Ink
2013

"Sometimes I hate you for what you did to me", I feel this highlights intensive emotions of betrayal, capturing an essence of pain and sadness. This may incorporate Fernandos personal life, piecing this together to portray a form of expression.
She has used ink in a sensitive element capturing a sense of light and flesh within the subject, suggestive that figure has been hurt and exploiting openly giving someone her trust.

Life drawing classes from 1950’s, Camberwell School of Art, Charcoal and Ink, 2011

This is the earliest work I have been able to find which has been documented of Fernando, this portrays a sense of history as the figure within the subject look traditional.

Critque Feedback

This photograph portrays my work presented with my critique, there wasn't much space available to present our work, and if I were to present work in an Exhibition I would create a installation to create a spiritual atmosphere.

04/12/2013

I felt my feedback was beneficial as it highlighted the fact I was conveying my area of interest. Within our critique the artist didn't talk which allowed the others to interpret the piece themselves, they felt my work captured an essence of a memorial. The use of materials and media within my work has been experimented, the development of my materials perhaps has become distorted which suggests it fading away.
The combination of materials could suggestive layers of emotions and traces of memories, my work creates a spiritual and ghostly presence.

I found this useful as it allowed me to understand how my work could be incorporated, each materials contains a depth of detail and meaning within.

Development

"Untitled" A5
Wax, Lace, Thread, Ink, Coffee, Tissue Paper
2013

This was a experimentation to create a rag and rough substance which reflects the mummies rags suggestive to decay. I have also incorporated wax which reacts as a distortion as I feel it creates a depth of different dimension, suggestive of the after life. I find the use of materials interesting as it conveys my concept but the way I have applied the media as created a solid subject, which creates a sense of negativity and I was to capture a sense of movement. The materials I have used are delicate and fragile which reflect the life cycle, the wax is brittle suggestive of life, you never know what is going to happen. I believe the wax has created a ghostly atmosphere within the piece as its almost translucent, suggestive of whispers of what we cannot see but feel.

"Untitled" A1
Watercolour Paper, Pencil , Wax, Coffee, Ink, Lace and Thread
2013
I have explored using the combination of materials to create a subtle atmosphere, I find it interesting how I have used the media and materials to highlight a sense of perspective, creating a sense of space. The mark making is broken and brittle suggestive of decay, it almost creates a ghostly atmosphere. The media has layered in different areas leaving random marks which could almost represent orbs, suggestive to spiritual energy. There is a element of movement within my work which is suggestive of spiritual energy.

"Untitled" A1
Tissue Paper, Pencil, Coffee, Acrylic, Chalk, Watercolour, Thread, Lace and Wax
2013

I have layered onto tissue paper within this piece, which is a delicate and subtle materials, it is very brittle suggestive it is precious reflecting life. The material I have layer capture an essence of sentimental values reminiscent of the past, suggestive to a memorial. The location is placed on a street, as you can tell by the lamppost, portraying the audience into the subject. I have used fast mark making to highlight a sense of movement suggestive to a spiritual atmosphere. I have incorporated a element of colour within this piece to capture element of happiness reflecting upon a precious memory in celebration of a life. The subtle piece has created emotions of awe and sadness, reflecting a sense of nostalgia. The materials I have layered could represent a personal belongings highlighting a sentimental subject. The stitching has layered a rough and textured surface create a relief emphasizing a presence, the loose material has created a sense of movement within the piece.
I would like to present this piece suspended on its own integrity engaging audience to the simplistically of the piece, as the audience will have to interact with the piece closing up to view.

Development

Having explored through my relative inspirations of Fayum mummy portraits, I am going incorporate elements to signify an element of death, almost reflecting a spiritual energy which suggests the belief of an afterlife, a continuity of life.

"Untitled" A2
Tissue Paper on Watercolour Paper, Ribon, Thread, Acrylic, Coffee, Watercolors
2013

This piece portrays my exploration within road memorials as I felt this presents a celebration of life almost keeping the figure with us as the subject which are places create a positive energy, highlighting a sense of nostalgia. This captures a sense of sensitivity highlighting a sense of sadness and realism, as it touches upon a personal experience of loss.
The ribon is a prefound object I found, which I found intrguied as it was lost, and I preserved this subject, as it may contain sentimental values, therefore this a symbol of memories and celebration of life. I have stitched into the subject to highlight a complex subject, which also create a sense of decay and fragility. The materials has a sense of relief which is suggestive of spiritual energy as they create a presence.
I have used coffee to highlight a aged subject highlight a history, and how subject become faded as time passes. I have used a element of gold within this piece to interlink with the Fayum mummy portrait which suggestive of preciousness highlighting emotions.

"Untitled" A4
Watercolour on Silk and Thread
2013

I have explored using different materials, I find this material has a translucency highlight a presence within the subject suggestive of the afterlife. I have explored using a golden aged colour pallet to reflect a sense of importance highlighting sensitive emotions.  I have used organic media which has reflected a sense of realism, perhaps the media is representation of tears, suggestive of sadness and despair.

"Untitled" A5
Coffee on Silk, Lace, Tissue paper, Thread
2013

I have explored layers of materials, taking inspiration from the Fayum mummies, as they paint directly on rag of the mummies. I believe this allows me to suggest to the after life capturing an essence of decay. The materials all have element of fragility which highlights the life cycle. I have used a limited colour pallet within this piece, to reflect a sense of sadness.
"Untitled" A5
Watercolour, Acrylic, Nail varnish on Wood
2013

I have explored painting onto wood here, taking inspiration from the Fayum mummies, although I didn't find this successful as I feel the wood creates a sense of stillness, creating a sense of negativity. I would like to capture a essence of translucency and movement within my practice to portray my personal concept.

Fayum Mummy Portraits

Mummy Portrait from Antinoopolis
Found in Winter 1905/06, Sold to Berlin in 1907, Egyptian Museum
Having explored an element of the afterlife, I want to explore different representations of the passover, therefore I was recommended to explore Fayum Mummy Portraits, which I found myself conceptually inspired.
The mummy portraits represented death, as they were placed to cover the faces of the mummified bodies for burial. The traditional paintings often depicted a head, upper chest or head to signify this.
Traditionally these painting would be presented onto wood, but sometimes they were directly painting onto the canvas or rags of the mummy wrapping which is known as cartonnage painting. This almost signifies an element of decay and fragility, which I would like to capture within my work.

"The finished panels were set into layers of wrapping that enclosed the body, and were surrounded by bands of cloth giving the effect of a window-like opening through which the face of the deceased could be seen."
This is suggestive of the pass over to the afterlife, the surreal elements of a window-like which is reflective of another dimension within reality.

They also used encaustic which is also known as a wax substance to paint onto, which I believe reacted as a distorted highlighting the space between the audience and the drawing, suggestive of this figure is gone.

Golf leaf was used to capture an essence of jewellery and wreath, suggestive of wealth which personally reflects a sense of history.

In some sources, Fayum mummy portraits were linked with a Roman belief as there was correlation through their ancestors. Within this belief they wore funeral masks, which were worn by mourners to emphasize they connection and belief of the continuity of life, creating a spiritual presence.

Development

Having reflected upon my collection of work, I am going to focus on portraying a spiritual presence highlighting the afterlife and embellishing the subject with fragility and decay which is suggestive to the life cycle. I want to capture a sense of awe and beauty reflecting upon a passed over figures life, incorporating his personality and my memories.
I have used a simplistic colour pallet which creates a sense of stillness and silence, suggestive of obscure of a life been took away. The tissue paper has a delicate and intricate element with, it is almost translucent capturing elements of decay and a presence.

I find this piece disappointing as the figures out of proportion and perspective, although I find the use of material interesting how I have layered them to create a distortion, replacing the pieces together which is suggestive changes and the impacts upon others through these experiences of loss.

I have simplistically place a line drawing which captures a essence of the figure placing their presents amongst the atmosphere. I have layered a feather which is suggestive of the afterlife, as it represents an angelic atmosphere.

Having took inspiration from Joseph Beuys I have used an approach using a simplistic colour pallet creating a calm and subtle atmosphere. I have used fast and intricate mark making to create a sense of movement, suggestive of change within time. I have captured the surroundings of the figure, leaving a space of emptiness which reflects where this figure was placed, suggestive of the pass over, this figure is no longer here.

Development

This portrays my exploration through ideas, different techniques to portray my concept in relation to my theme Journey.

I have experimented with over layering materials which may perhaps withhold sentimental values, creating a sense of history. I have used this element to create a sense of perspective creating a distortion between the figures, it creates a distraction which is suggestive of time and space, the figures are almost fading away.

I have layered the atmosphere, surrounding the figures suggestive of the not being there anymore, this is is suggestive of the afterlife highlighting death. Theres a presence of a figure within the subject creating a spiritual atmosphere. This drawing portrays a memory of mine from a holiday back in 2012 which creates a sense of nostalgia and sadness.

I have used a personal book to emphasise sensitive emotions within my work, I have replicated elements and layered them together to create a distorted figure, almost replicating the human memory. The surface is disjointed and broken which highlights a sense of decay and fragility.

Here I have experimented layered into silk which is a delicate and translucent material, it almost creates a spiritual presence which reflects the energy of the passed over figures with my work. The silk is reflective of light which intensifies the subject emphasising  the spiritual energy.

Dales Drawing Talk

Having been presented a professional talk by my Drawing Tutor, which allowed me to get a better understanding of requirements whilst presenting my work, I found elements of the chosen artists inspiring.

This piece is presented in a Book, which highlights a sense of a journey simplistically, the artist has layered a photograph which has a element of age and history. I may present my work in this context to emphasise a personal subject.

This piece presents a sense of journey as it captures the element of time and decay, the dust is replicant of the life cycle, I may incorporate this within my work to capture an essence of the life cycle.
The dust is a chalky substance which reacts as a facade highlighting time.

I find the simplicity within this work inspiring, as it creates a tranquil and calm atmosphere.  The limited and aged colour pallet has created a sense of history, perhaps this could be a passed down sentimental subject. The use of hard writing has emphasised the personal subject intensifying sensitivity within the piece.

The artist has captured elements of directions within this piece which is reminiscent of the past, where the figure has been capturing a Journey.

This piece has been put in a box and suspended onto a rock in the sea, this has captured the notion of pen movement over a duration of time capturing a sense of realism through experiencing the location.

I may experiment using elements of these techniques to symbolise a Journey within my development, I find it intriguing to explore my past.

Development

This presents my exploration within my history, highlighting passed down sentimental objects which intensify the sense of nostalgia, creating contemplation reminiscent of the past.

I have scanned my poetry book which was a gift from my Granddad when I younger, as a child I aspired to this, within this book I have personalised it, it's almost like a diary creating a sense of nostalgia.

"Untitled"A5
Watercolour, Fine Liner on Poetry Book
2013

I have used childish bright colour pallet here to capture the essence of time within the subject, as this portrays myself as a child in Nursery. I have used organic media which creates a distortion within the piece creating a almost a blur suggestive of the human memory.

"Untitled" A5
Ink, Coffee, Tissue Paper and Poetry Book
2013

Here I have experimented with the layering of different materials, which have a translucent element creating a sense of time and history. I have placed tissue paper over the surface of my Granddads book which reacts almost as a distortion representing time.

"Untitled" A5
Pencil on Tissue paper and Poetry Book
2013
I have used delicate subtle media here, which has created a spiritual atmosphere, suggestive of the afterlife. The surface of the material has captured the light reflecting it creating a sense of sensitivity within the piece. It almost captures an essence of nostalgia reflecting my memory.

"Untitled" A5
Pencil, Coffee on Watercolour Paper
2013
I have been influenced by Joseph Beuys within this piece as he used coffee to create his figurative drawings,  I feel this has captured a sense of age and history. It has has layered up on the figures, creating a sense of distorted almost highlighting changes within time.

Development

Having explored Leicester I felt that Nostalgia and memories had became an area of interest, therefore I am going to explore this further, focusing on this theme through my everyday life. I wanted to capture the essence of spiritual energy within my drawings creating emotions of awe.

"Untitled" A4
Watercolour on Paper, Silk, Graphite, Thread
2013

I wanted to capture the beauty within the culture of Leicester, I have used fluid media to represent the organic location as it surrounds a Water Fountain. I have used intricate detail to capture the ridges of the substance suggestive of decay and changing season. The silk has created a shiny and reflective surface, creating a spiritual energy within the piece, the silk could represent a reflection of nostalgia perhaps.
The materials I have used are free which creates a sense of movement suggestive of a spiritual atmosphere.

"Untitled" A4
Ink, Watercolour, Chalk, Coffee on Watercolour Paper
2013

This piece I have incorporated an energised colour pallet suggestive of positive energy highlighting the cultural atmosphere, which engages with the audience. I have depicted areas of colours to highlight the christmas tradition within Leicester, which has created a sense of awe and nostalgia. I feel this piece reflects and captures a memory of mine which is inspiring, as I find it interesting how things can change over a short duration of time.

I may explore my history looking upon my childhood to the present, highlight an elements of decay and emotions of beauty, awe and nostalgia.

Journey

Within my drawing module, we were given a brief requiring us to explore the theme Journey, I found this subject interesting as an Journey can be interpreted in many different ways. I have explored Journey different ways, which I have an area of interest previously in my Photography A level I have explored this theme reflecting upon my Great Nana Coopers religious belief. I may start off exploring Leicester to grasps a simplistic understanding of a Journey, the emotions and experiences I feel throughout this.

"Untiled"
Pencil on Watercolour Paper, A5
2013

This piece portrays my everyday life in my new living conditions, in the Student Halls, it almost highlights personality and relationships. Personally this drawing reflects a nostalgic presence as its in the past, capturing an essence in time.
The mark making is scratchy and fast creating disjointed and chaotic lines suggestive of movement and energy, theres a embellishment of decay in the subject.

These series of drawings are almost a documentation of my Journey around Leicester, this is the surroundings of my halls, which captures an essence of culture.

"Untitled"
 Pencil on Watercolour Paper, A5
2013

This portrays a sense of beauty, I found myself inspired by relationships between a mother and children. A drawing captures a essence of memory, incorporating my fast mark making which is suggestive of movement. The children are positioned focused on a simplistic object, creating a sense of innocence and awe. Its almost surreal how children visualise a everyday object.

"Untitled"
Pencil on Watercolour Paper, A5
2013

I found this piece interesting as I stood still, and I captured every subject around me which created a sense of a notion, I find it interesting exploring others life styles. The bike almost is suggestive of the life cycle, as the notion of wheels journey, changing and explore new experiences.

"Untitled"
Watercolour on Paper, A5
 2013

This portrays Bede Park in Leicester, the figures within the drawing are presented as a family, highlighting a sense of awe and positive energy. I feel this piece highlights a sense of nostalgia, reflecting my childhood, as the media I have used has created a chalky substance almost reacting as a distortion between the audience and the subject reflecting a sense of time and nostalgia.

"Untitled"
Watercolour on Paper, A5
2013

This drawing presents student working on their own personal project, as they were position using cameras and soft microphones, which I found intriguing I felt the urge to understand what they were working on.
Within my work I explored different locations, focusing on mark making and perspective to get a better understand of the subject Journey.

Life Drawing

Within my Drawing assignment, we had the opportunity to explore a Life Drawing module, which develop my understand of the use of visual language, I found this beneficial within my practice as it allowed me to challenge myself.
"Untitled"
Pencil, Graphie, Charcoal on Watercolour Paper
A1, 2013

I was experimenting with different technique creating the figure within this piece, as the first subject I didn't measure I just created the form by looking. The second subject I used the technique of measuring up the perspective and angles which allowed me to create correct proportions. The third subject, I combined both techniques using a faster media, a graphite stick which captured an element within my mark making. Overall these sketches were quickly as I was under pressure of a time limit.

"Untitled"
Pencil on Watercolour Paper
A1, 2013

Here I had half an hour to create the subject, I felt like using this technique of drawing to challenge myself to create a form which is in perspective and proportion, which I find visually interesting. The layers of different marks almost create a sense of movement within the piece, the figure is positioned with her feet up therefore its suggestive of peaceful and calm atmosphere.

These previous drawings portray a sense of perspective as we were exploring the nature of space. I have used intensity of detail in depicted areas to push back subjects into the foreground highlighting the perspective within the piece. I have used tonal areas to create a sense of perspective within the piece, directing the objects in my work, it almost creates a surreal atmosphere making you feel your in the room.

"Untitled"
Charcoal, Graphite and Pencil on Watercolour Paper

This piece portrays my exploring using materials in different ways to create tonal areas and contrasts. I had to focus on almost a negative subject, looking at areas of light and dark only to create the subject.
"Untitled" Detail
Charcoal on Watercolour Paper
A4, 2013

I found the technique of erasing the marks successful as it allowed me to experiment with perspectives and tonal areas of light and dark. Using this technique was almost an opposite way of working for me as I always complicate the subject, this was almost therapeutic it created a sense of relief for me. It almost reminds me of a skeleton, which relates to my interest within my practice exploring the afterlife.

I had a longer duration of time to create this piece, I was experimented with tonal areas, reflections, perspectives and proportion which was challenging. Using the technique of erasing certain areas has allowed me to capture an essence of flesh reflecting a sense of realism. The colour pallet is monochromatic, creating a negative and cold atmosphere.

"Untitled"

A1, 2013
I was challenging myself creating this piece, taking into consideration of the atmosphere surrounding the figure, the place shes positioned, looking at the Life model scenery as a whole. I wanted to created the sense of space between myself and the room, capturing my experience and my peers.
