"Portrait of the Artist"
Jennifer Rubell
Frieze 2013

This piece "Portrait of the Artist" I seen first at Frieze in London last year 2013, which was enormous pregnant women, highlighting the womb which was presented empty allowing the audience to position themselves inside interacting with the audience. Which was quite surreal, it can relate individually to everyone whether that is reflecting the audience back to being inside the womb, or pregnancy themselves. It reflects the audiences into contemplation. The subject is strong, suggestive its protective, reflecting my concept of exploring the foetus as the amniotic fluid is significant of protection.
In creating this piece, Rubell herself was 8 months pregnant, where she then scanned the surface of her body, enlarging the subject allowing a adult to interact with the artwork. Rubell wanted to portray her energy and thoughts of pregnancy into her artwork as she was inspired by the foetus growing inside of her. She wanted to capture an intimacy of the audience interacting with physically with her work.
"Being inside there, Cocoon of noise, you feel like your in a special place"
Jennifer Rubell
I have highlighted this quote from a video documentary of Jennifer Rubell exploring "Portrait of the Artist" as I feel like reflects a sense of space and contemplation, a place where the audience feel safe which is suggestive to protection.
